My inbox, reader mail

I got an email overnight from a young lady named Meghan. She has a question I dont really know the answer to. Can anyone answer her? She says she reads my blog, so hopefully she sees this.

From Meghan: "I dont know if you will know this but i am 16 and getting married soon i will have parent consent so it will be a legal marriage he is in ait training right now but hes getting stationed in korea i was wandering if i would be able to go overseas with him on or off base..and also is there an age limit for the wifes to live on or off base."

I honestly dont know the answer to you question Meghan. Joe was stationed in Germany for two years before we got married. He would have had to extend his tour in Germany if I had wanted to move over there. I didnt, and he just PCSed (moved) back to the states. I do have a friend in Korea, maybe she will see this and has some idea what the answers to your questions are.

Thanks everyone for your answers!

Not sure about other branches but Adam was told when he joined that the Navy does not allow spouses to PCS overseas if the sailor is below a certain rank
(can't remember for sure but I think it was E3 or 4) but also, since he was married when he joined that he would not be assigned to an overseas station until he reached that rank. Not sure if that was helpful or not but it's something.

I have a feeling that she would be required to be 18 to PCS - is Korea longer than a 1 year unaccompanied? May have to ask his recruiter that one

My mother married my dad when she was 16 years old, because my dad had got his orders to be stationed in Germany. (My dad was fresh in the Army too, just out of AIT) My mom quit her high school here in the US, and packed up only what she needed, and moved to Germany with my dad. Like I said she was only 16, and he was obviously under an E3 or E4. As far as I know they didn't give my mom or dad any issues.
Only thing is, that was back in 1986. LOL.
Also, my best friend got married when she was 17 years old, and pcs'd with her husband to Germany. He was also fresh out of AIT. They didn't give her any problems. This was January 2010. More recent :)
I hope this helped some :)

When they get married, she becomes his legal dependent. As far as being able to go to Korea with him, that will be based on where he is stationed and the slots they have available for Command Sponsorship. Her age won't be a deciding factor. If she chooses to go overseas without being command sponsored and chooses to live off post, she just has to know that he may not get approval to live with her. Because it will be his first duty station and he is lower ranking he may be required to live in barracks (if he does not get command sponsorship). They need to take all of that into consideration. He can apply for command sponsorship though, the worst they can say is no.

Thanks ladies. Hopefully she sees this and gets her answers.

Once they are married she is looked at the same as any other wife. The big thing about coming to Korea is for her husband to get Command Sponsorship for her, otherwise she should just stay home.
